Laurel will be an architecturally diverse, mixed-use, traditional neighborhood in Yuma, AZ. Laurel will have 1,169 housing units of various types and scales; a mixed-use main street with 110,000 square feet of commercial/retail development; numerous parks, paseos, community gardens, and trails; a recreation center; and a 25-acre farm, including a farm stand.
Tanimura & Antle is a recognized leader in the produce industry and operates with a strong commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability. Tanimura & Antle, the land owner, has teamed up with Urban Community Partners of Monterey, CA to develop Laurel.
Urban Design Associates designed the master plan for Laurel, envisioning a series of distinct neighborhoods within close proximity and walking distance to each other. UDA then created a Pattern Book to guide the design and character of the neighborhoods, architecture, and landscape of Laurel.
Out of that design process, UDA was selected to develop a conceptual design for the Hacienda. The Hacienda will be used as a retreat for Tanimura & Antle. It is designed as a Spanish Revival courtyard complex, with a series of “hotel” suites, a large demonstration kitchen, dining and gathering spaces, an outdoor pool, and a caretaker’s cottage.
I was asked by UDA to help design and refine the Hacienda complex. I also created a series of digital models and numerous illustrations to arrive at a detailed design consensus.
