The Millers provided me with a wonderful design opportunity when they decided to build a house on their newly acquired 257-acre farmstead in Western Pennsylvania. They chose a beautiful site and expressed a desire to use natural materials and an innovative program. The final design includes an elegant series of diverse interior and exterior spaces.
The house is set into a hill overlooking a forested ravine. The program is divided into four distinct functions, each of which is housed in its own section of the plan. The garages and office are set into the hill above the main house to create a small entry court and garden. The main house is connected to the guest house by a covered entry porch. The main living and dining spaces take advantage of the views downhill and open onto the deck and outdoor dining courtyard. Perhaps the most dramatic space is the stone stair tower that connects the main house to the fourth program element: the master bedroom wing. The bedroom wing is set at a lower elevation for privacy and for maximum sun exposure during the morning.
I created the program through discussion and precedent sharing and then developed a series of schematic designs to arrive at the final design. The design development drawings and final builder’s set will be done by the Millers and their land development company staff.
